Access to clean water, safe sanitation, and a healthy environment is essential for dignity and development, yet many communities in Ghana continue to face challenges such as inadequate WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) facilities, poor waste management, and environmental degradation. These challenges disproportionately affect women and children, who often bear the responsibility of fetching water, maintaining household hygiene, and caring for family members when preventable diseases strike.

WICEF’s Water, Sanitation & Environmental Health program tackles these issues through a combination of service delivery, education, and community advocacy.

Program components:

  1. WASH Promotion – WICEF works with schools, women’s groups, and community associations to promote hygiene practices such as regular handwashing, menstrual hygiene management, and safe water storage. By engaging students and parents, we create long-term cultural shifts around health and sanitation.
  2. Waste Management Initiatives – Poor waste disposal remains a pressing problem in urbanizing towns. WICEF trains youth and women’s cooperatives in waste segregation, recycling, and composting. Through clean-up campaigns and advocacy with local assemblies, we also support improved systems for waste collection and disposal, reducing pollution in homes, schools, and public spaces.
  3. Environmental Advocacy – WICEF mobilizes communities to protect their environment through tree-planting, anti-burning campaigns, and climate awareness education. We also engage district authorities on the need for policies that integrate community-driven solutions into municipal environmental planning.

Impact so far:

• Communities where WICEF has promoted hygiene practices report significant reductions in preventable diseases such as diarrhea and cholera.
• Women and youth trained in composting and recycling have created small enterprises, turning waste into income opportunities.
• Environmental advocacy has influenced local authorities to integrate grassroots voices in decision-making on waste and water projects.

Future outlook:

WICEF plans to expand this program by:
• Establishing school-based WASH clubs that train students as hygiene ambassadors.
• Partnering with private sector innovators in recycling and clean water provision.
• Developing a model of community-led environmental governance, where local voices shape sustainable waste and sanitation policies.

By integrating WASH, waste management, and environmental care into our empowerment framework, WICEF ensures that communities are healthier, more resilient, and better equipped to face the challenges of urban growth and climate change.
