Communities in Ghana, especially women and young people in rural and peri-urban areas, are increasingly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Erratic rainfall, flooding, soil degradation, and limited livelihood options continue to undermine food security and family income. WICEF’s Sustainable Livelihoods & Climate Adaptation program equips households, particularly women and youth, with the tools, skills, and resources to adapt to these challenges while building more resilient local economies.

Program focus areas:

  1. Rural Economy Diversification – Many rural families depend on single-income activities such as subsistence farming, which exposes them to high risks when floods, droughts, or market shocks occur. WICEF supports women and youth to diversify into agro-processing, soap-making, small-scale trading, and handicrafts. By spreading economic activities across multiple sectors, households reduce vulnerability and increase stability.
  2. Youth & Women in Agriculture – Recognizing the central role of agriculture in local economies, WICEF empowers women and young people to adopt innovative and sustainable farming practices. Training covers climate-smart agriculture, organic composting, safe use of natural pesticides, and sustainable irrigation techniques. This not only boosts productivity but also protects ecosystems and promotes food sovereignty.
  3. Climate Adaptation Awareness – Beyond technical training, WICEF runs sensitization programs that help communities understand climate risks and adopt collective strategies such as tree planting, water conservation, and flood preparedness. Women’s groups are central to these efforts, ensuring that adaptation is community-owned and inclusive.

Impact so far:

• Women’s cooperatives supported by WICEF have diversified household income streams, reducing dependence on single crops.
• Youth participants have introduced innovative practices, such as composting and agroforestry, into family farms.
• Community-wide awareness sessions have improved preparedness for floods and drought, contributing to local resilience.
Future outlook:
WICEF plans to strengthen this program by:
• Expanding partnerships with agricultural extension services and climate-focused NGOs.
• Piloting digital platforms that connect women farmers to market information and pricing trends.
• Linking microcredit schemes to sustainable agriculture enterprises, ensuring long-term viability of green livelihoods.

By integrating women’s leadership, youth innovation, and climate resilience, this program advances both economic empowerment and environmental sustainability, ensuring that communities not only survive but also thrive in the face of change.
