WICEF is one of the few non-governmental, non-profit organizations in Ghana that openly advocates for the dignity and rights of LGBTQI+ persons at the grassroots level. In a context where stigma, discrimination, and exclusion are widespread, our work in this area is both courageous and urgently needed. We believe that human rights are indivisible, and empowering marginalized groups, including LGBTQI+ communities, is essential for creating an inclusive, just, and sustainable society.

Core pillars of the program:

  1. Safe Spaces – WICEF creates welcoming and confidential environments where LGBTQI+ persons can meet, share experiences, and access psychosocial support without fear of judgment or violence. These spaces are critical for building resilience and strengthening community solidarity.
  2. Capacity-Building – Through leadership training, legal literacy workshops, and skills development programs, LGBTQI+ participants gain tools to advocate for their rights, start small enterprises, and actively contribute to their communities. This approach recognizes that inclusion must go beyond protection, it must also open opportunities for growth and agency.
  3. Anti-Discrimination Advocacy – WICEF works with community leaders, schools, and local institutions to challenge harmful stereotypes and reduce prejudice. We facilitate dialogues that emphasize respect, equality, and human dignity, aligning with Ghana’s constitutional principles and international human rights frameworks.

Impact so far:

• WICEF has established itself as the only grassroots NGO in its region that integrates LGBTQI+ advocacy into broader community empowerment programs.
• Beneficiaries have reported feeling more confident to participate in community meetings and local initiatives.
• Engagement with traditional leaders and educators has reduced harmful rhetoric and created allies for LGBTQI+ rights in unexpected places.

Future outlook:

Our goal is to expand this work by:
• Linking LGBTQI+ advocacy to broader development programs such as health, livelihoods, and climate resilience.
• Building regional alliances with like-minded organizations to amplify impact.
• Documenting and sharing stories of resilience and leadership to counteract stigma at the national and international level.

By embedding LGBTQI+ inclusion within WICEF’s broader mission of empowerment, we demonstrate that sustainable development is only possible when no one is left behind.
